About Boğaziçi University

Boğaziçi University was formally established in 1971, but it has the long history of Robert College, which was the first American College set up outside the boundaries of United States in 1863. With the transfer of the site to the Turkish government, Boğaziçi University became the direct heir to not only the excellent facilities of Robert College, but also its distinguished academic tradition. The university includes four faculties (Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Economics and Administrative Sciences, and Education), six institutes (offering graduate programs), The School of Foreign Languages, and The School of Applied Disciplines Sciences.

Many of the Universitys buildings are located on its South Campus, with the Bosphorous and the historical fortress of Rumelihisar as its boundary to the east. This campus encompasses the oldest buildings of the University. The completion of the Main Library, the Science and Engineering Laboratories Building, the Mens Residence Hall II, the Womens Residence Hall II and the Educational Technology Building has enhanced the North Campus.

The Kandilli Campus, housing the observatory, was incorporated into the University in 1982, and the Hisar Campus in 1989. The University has a modern dormitory Superdorm and a large cultural and sports complex on the Uçaksavar Campus. A resort near Kilyos on the Black Sea coast, called Sarıtepe Campus, where a new complex of buildings is under construction, was acquired in 1985.

Today, Boğaziçi University's highest standards are universally acknowledged. Its excellent and well-deserved academic reputation attracts the best students in the country. The university's academic programs are enhanced by a traditionally strong emphasis on extra-curricular activities which perform an important function in preparing students for leadership roles in society. The flexibility of academic programs, interdisciplinary and wide range of course offerings are significant advantages that characterize and distinguish the institution.

Boğaziçi University has been endorsed by the European Universities Association (EUA). Also B.U. Faculty of Engineering and its all departments is the first faculty, which is endorsed by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) whose center is located in USA.

Facilities at Boğaziçi University

Library

The library holds over 450,000 volumes in English, Turkish, French, German and other languages, which makes it one of the largest collections in the country. The Near East Collection is the richest collection of Near East materials in Western languages in Turkiye. The Rare Book Division contains early printed books and manuscripts. The Library receives over 1600 current periodicals. Microfilms of the Times, New York Times, Cumhuriyet and Milliyet are also maintained.

Computer Center

The Computer Center is in South Campus. You can apply there for a temporary e-mail account with your student faculty ID. The account will be disabled upon your departure. Computer Center is open everyday between 09:00 - 17:00.

Activities

The campus offers a myriad of extra-curricular activities and social events, almost all of which are prepared by student; concerts, plays, films, folk dancing, exhibition, sports competitions, as well as conferences make life at Boğaziçi University very colorful.
