Course Description : This course is intended to introduce the student to the main paradigms of algorithm analysis, methods and mathematical tools used for analyzing the correctness and performance of algorithms, the theory of parallel algorithms, as well as known sequential and parallel algorithmic solutions to frequently encountered problems. The theory of complexity analysis, basic techniques that are commonly used in analyzing the performance, basic classes of algorithms (comparisonbased, recursive, divideandconquer, numerical, graph), and lower bound theory will be covered. Parallel architectures and parallel algorithms will be studied in detail. Meanwhile, mathematical tools like interpolation, generating functions, master theorem, etc. will be introduced. The last part of the course will be the study of the topic of probabilistic algorithms, which is a recent but rapidly growing area of research.

Course Description : Branding is a means of distinguishing the products of one producer from those of competitors in the market. Brands are the most valuable assets of companies because strong brands have the ability to simplify consumer decision making, reduce risk, and set expectations. Building strong brands that deliver on that promise, and maintaining and enhancing the strength of those brands over time is a management imperative. This elective course provides students with insights into how profitable brand strategies can be generated. The basic objectives of this course are to provide an understanding of: (1) important issues in planning and evaluating brand strategies; and (2) appropriate concepts and techniques to improve the longterm profitability of brand strategies.

Course Description : Description: The course is an introductory survey of ancient philosophy in three parts: The Beginnings of Philosophy (PreSocratics, Socrates, Sophistry), Classical Philosophy (Plato and Aristotle), Hellenistic Philosophy (Skeptics, Stoics, NeoPlatonists). The final week will look at the beginnings of medieval philosophy and theology. As a survey course, the grading will be based on two tests and an exam, equally weighted; each more or less corresponding to the three phases of the course. A course reader will be available at a copy shop. A more detailed webpage (description and syllabus) can be found at http://sites.google.com/site/phil11101/. The course will also be a lively introduction to philosophy, a guided tour of some of the more fascinating positions and styles in philosophy, as well as a sampling of different philosophical topics.

Course Description : Phys 488: C Programming This course will cover the fundamentals of the C programming language. The first few lectures of the course will teach the basics of the C programming language, and then, we will move onto more advanced topics. Each week there will be an assignment that will require writing some C programs. Programming exercises will focus mostly on scientific applications. In this context some basic numerical analysis topics will be introduced. No programming language training is complete without a basic understanding of data structures in programming. So, if time permits, we will cover some basic data structures in C like linkedlists, queues, hash tables, binary trees, etc. We will also discuss programming styles and some best practices to employ while writing C programs. Prerequisites: Familiarity with an OS like Windows or Linux (at user level).

Course Description : Urban areas, where more than half of the world population resides today are more important than ever as sites of social (in)justice, marginalization, exclusion and of course conflict and struggle. As terrains of a variety of social inequality and as landscapes containing disadvantaged and marginalized places like slums or shantytowns, cities are key sites of the transformation of the global economy. Rising inequality creates fear in cities and leads affluent, high security fortress dwellings or gated communities all over the world and leads us to consider the very crucial issues of social justice and conflict and hence, the bottomup movements of negotiation, struggle and resistance in the urban areas. Therefore, this course will pay special attention to urban social movements.

Course Description : This is a course on social and political theories of language. Specifically, it develops a critique of structuralism as an approach to language as a system independent of politics and culture, and focuses instead on the ways in which questions of power, inequality, and the cultural politics of nation states affect language as practice (i.e. how we speak). Course readings cover classic and contemporary theory (Ferdinand de Saussure, Emile Benveniste, Mikhail Bakhtin, Michel Foucault, Judith Butler), as well as ethnographies examining the ways in which language practice is embedded in inequalities, ideologies, and political contestation. No previous knowledge of linguistics is required.

Course Description : This course aims to introduce students to qualitative research methods. Throughout the course, students will get familiar with the main tools of conducting qualitative research step by step. We will begin by examining what qualitative research is, how it is designed, and what kind of a research field it describes and sets out to explore. We will then move on to understanding, in an applied fashion, how some basic qualitative research methods are put to work. Students will both read about, and try out methods such as participant observation and fieldnote taking, interviewing, conducting oral history/life history interviews, narrative analysis of both fiction and nonfiction texts (such as novels, historical archives, and legal documents), and media analysis.

Course Description : This class aims to examine the contested process of globalization and the economic, cultural, and political logics of neoliberalization(s) through a comparative cultural lens. It pays particular, but not exclusive, attention to the transformations of economic structures from Fordism to Postfordism and from industrial to postindustrial, to shifts in political and nongovernmental organizations such as the nationstate and the transnational networks, to changes in global companies and workplaces, and to the contested social meanings of and relations between the consumer society, shopping, the late modernity, and the virtual capitalism. Our focus will mainly be on the cultural and social dynamics, while we will also see the links between sociocultural facades and the economic and political movements, challenges, and hegemonies of neoliberal globalization

Course Description : Global media spread the same ideals of freedom, entertainment, beauty and democracy, while cultural identities push for their differences from national levels. This curious coincidence is most striking on film, a media with global effect on identity. We study how the Hollywood industry and national ideologies influence film and what makes independent cinema. Our case study is Russia, leaping from Communist censorship to free media and the effect this global turn has on Russian film. 1/3 of the course is watching and discussing the once banned Soviet and new Russian art films and blockbusters rarely shown abroad. Studies of popular culture help explain how filmmakers see the end of the Cold War, European identity and parallel optimism of globalization and growing East West divide. Topics: Shock Westernization, Media Markets, Nationalism/Islamophobia/Antisemitism, Chechen wars, Celebrity and Youth Lifestyle.
